CL “HWA” & “5 STAR” REVIEW

CL IS BACK!! It has been quite a bit of time since CL has released new music consistently. After a three year hiatus starting in 2016, CL released the mini album In The Name of Love  in 2019. Now, CL has returned two new singles HWA and 5 STAR. These two singles were released in anticipation for her debut album, ALPHA, that will be released next month.

HWA as a rap and hip hop focused song, goes super hard. The bass is incredible and you can feel every bit of the vibration. There’s some techno laced within the beat that makes it feel like a dance track. It’s a pretty straight forward beat, but the claps and intense bass is what really gives it the energy. There are these moments where the beat goes to the back  and then CL’s rap comes to the forefront and commands your attention. There’s just so much presence and energy in this song. HWA screams “the baddest female” persona that we all know and love.

5 STAR is a softer, more vocal focused song. It still has the same techno and hip hop elements as HWA, but it’s more subdued and not as in your face. We get to hear CL’s vocals more and they truly are the focal point of the song. This song is a great show of CL’s duality. She can be the commanding and strong persona and she can be softer and more vulnerable.

Both songs show different sides of CL. As they were released together, they compliment each other really well. They’re such great teasers for what APLHA has in store for us and I can’t wait to listen to the album.
