SUNMI “TAIL” & “WHAT THE FLOWER” REVIEW

This morning, Sunmi released her new album, TAIL! The album includes two songs – What The Flower and TAIL, the title track. The music video for TAIL was released along with the album.

I can not even begin to express  how excited I was for this release. The teasers and concept photos were all over Instagram and this comeback looked absolutely stunning. Sunmi is always coming up with something new and pushing the boundaries. She is truly one of my favorite artists. I had pretty high expectations for  TAIL and What The Flower.

TAIL  is hauntingly beautiful. The bass is low and deep and you can feel each vibration. The energy starts off stifled and low. It swells up and when it finally unleashes, it feels full. The soft retro beat is almost hypnotic and has this quality to it that makes it almost eerie sounding. It fleshes out into the chorus and ups a bit in tempo. The brief uses of a shrill guitar in the background during the second verse was a nice touch and added more texture. By the end, you’re completely captivated with the entire song.

What The Flower is a bit more lively than TAIL. It’s a completely different atmosphere. The beginning keyboard gives it this jazz feel. There’s a bit of a mix in of electronic and r&b elements all the while maintaining that jazz feeling. There’s more use of that shrill guitar and the guitar really adds in that depth and electric undertone. The drums and baseline pulses, and the mix in with the piano keys was exquisite. The percussion of the instruments at the end made the song feel complete. I did not want it to end.

TAIL and What The Flower compliment each other very well. Both songs showcase the absolute best of Sunmi’s charms. I still don’t know which song is my favorite, but both will be playing on repeat.
